Projects for 2017 in the Boulder office are:

Machine Learning and its potential applications in classifying lightning.  This project will aim to investigate the use of machine learning methods, such as those available in the Google TensorFlow package in lightning characterization.

Goals:

  • Learn the technical aspects of acquiring, installing and using an open source machine learning package, such as TensorFlow, including the internal algorithms used, application interface, data input/output formats and size transfer limitations and computational requirements/options
  • help us collate and classify data from independent, high-resolution lightning detection systems know as Lightning Mapping Arrays to generate or add to qualified training and test sets of data from Vaisala’s U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN)
  • analyze and compare the lightning characterization performance of machine learning and other methods
  • teach those interested in Vaisala about a machine learning package and how to use it via a half or full day training session.

Successful candidates for the project should possess:

  • Solid theoretical and practical interest and understanding of machine learning techniques
  • At least one programming language, such as C, C++, R, Matlab, Python, Java, Perl, Go
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to interact with technical and non-technical personnel as well as deliver a final project report and knowledge-transfer session
  • Senior undergraduate or first year graduate student in computer science or another discipline of science or engineering, with coursework successfully completed in machine learning, artificial intelligence, numerical optimization or algorithm design

Using Camera imagery as weather data:  Exploring potential value and applications
.  This project involves investigating the use of Road Weather Information System (RWIS) camera imagery to enhance existing traditional or provide additional meteorological observations.

Goals:

  • Learning the technical aspects and characteristics of acquiring and processing RWIS camera imagery data with associated meteorological data using appropriate (Big Data, image processing, machine/deep learning, etc.) software tools
  • Developing models to relate camera imagery data to the meteorological observations using appropriate software tools
  • Analyzing and comparing the present time observations and 0-1 hour forecasts of present weather condition at two separate geographical locations with and without this model
  • Presenting a proof-of-concept demonstration and presentation.

Successful candidates for the project should possess:

  • Solid theoretical and practical understanding of image processing and/or machine learning techniques and at least one programming language (e.g, C, C++, R, MATLAB, Python, Java, etc.)
  • Ability to install and run the necessary software packages, perform the experiments and analyze the results
  • Ability to communicate  effectively, orally and in writing to interact with technical and non-technical personnel
  • Senior undergraduate or graduate studies in science or engineering, with coursework successfully completed in image/video processing, machine or deep learning, artificial intelligence and or algorithm design.

Best Summer Job

“Interns are taken into the company with open arms and it feels like the project really has a purpose.  The program not only helps a student delve deep in his/her technical knowledge, but also teaches him/her how to behave and communicate in a corporate environment.”

”Based on my experience about other internships/summer work and what I have heard from others, this is a super well organized internship with real business related projects – not just about doing some chores anyone could do.”

”Job content was excellent.  Not only did I work on content that was related to my coursework but also got an opportunity to learn the theoretical aspects of Lightning Physics, which is incredible.”
